495 Soundwall

495 Soundwall

Route 495 Sound Barrier Wall is a 105,000 square foot design-build soundwall with an overall height of 30 feet. The project is located on the Capital Beltway between Old Dominion Drive and Georgetown Pike in Fairfax County. Century Concrete's scope of work included 3.5 acres of clearing, grubbing and erosion controls, 20,000 cubic yards of excavation and grading, 600 linear feet of drainage improvements, and 11,000 square feet of mechanically-stabilized, earth-retaining structures. The soundwalls feature multiple concrete foundation designs, from shallow spread footings to drilled caissons to accommodate the extreme elevation and slope differentials that exist on the site. Limited access, narrow work areas, and heavy traffic volumes contribute to the daily challenges in work planning, coordination, execution, and material deliveries. As the prime contractor for the Virginia Department of Transportation, Century Concrete took the lead role in assembling a project team of small business subcontractors and suppliers in order to meet the Department's disadvantaged business enterprise requirements.
